My son had to work on a community project for a school assignment. We, together, decided to give a little something back to the community that I work in- our beloved Broad Ripple. The result was a fun day of weeding, planting, mulching, fencing, and laughing. You can see the results of his efforts in front of our store.

Most people enjoy a good book, a fine meal, or cuddling up with their honey. I enjoy all of those things too...but I enjoy shopping for antiques and vintage goodies almost more (but I will deny it if you tell anyone). My friend Jenny and I headed east last week to Columbus Ohio for the fall Country Living Magazine fair. I loaded my new used cargo van to the gills with some good old fashioned crap. I took loads of pictures to share with all. I want to point out that I purchased those 3 lights that were made out of old fence. Have no idea where they will end up, but I just had to have them all the same.

I have become my grandma....

I just returned from a show in Las Vegas with Cameron. We stayed 3 nights even though i only went to the show one day. For some odd reason, he really wanted to come with me even to the show. God love that man! Actually, he is an amazing artist and is looking to launch his own line of women's t-shirts. Nonetheless, he is the most supportive person I have ever known.

He also happens to be a very skilled gambler (poo poo to those who think its all luck!). He won enough to pay for the trip, gifts for our 3 kids, several of vegas' finest buffets and almost $800.00 on top of that. I somehow managed to pocket the dough for an upcoming shopping trip that I have planned. I keep waiting for him to ask but he doesn't seem that interested in the money...just the glory of the win and my obvious persistent praise. I, on the other hand, did not fare well. I lost several hundred dollars and became a supportive bystander by night two. None of this is the part where I have become like my dear grandma. the picture should tell the story: On the first night I actually took pictures of our hotel bathroom at the Venetian as I was so impressed. Even took a picture of the toilet. This is the part where I have become my grandmother. God rest her sweet soul.....

We received a large shipment of my favorite tees in the world (well, at least in the parts I have traveled)...Alternative Apparel. Also received goodies from so many of my favorite brands including this white dress/top from 5th Culture. It is a knit blend so its made for fall but is cute like the summer goodies. Oh my I could just go on and on and on and on....

I just got back from Market and was so pleased to see soooo many new arrivals waiting formy return. I love everything and this is JUST the beginning. There is nothing in the bunch priced over $89.00 and most of it is around $40- $60.00. Jeepers Creepers I am going to need to take over space in Cameron's closet again. He has chased me out twice before but I tried to explain that my clothes matter while his are just necessities. I tried....

Can it almost be August? We just got home from our family trip to Texas. Kids pretty much ruled this one....water slide here....pool party there....bowling alley over there.... We adults decided to just surender to them; after all we still have our memories as kids. Strange to almost watch these memories form right in front of us. At any rate, we had a blast. As our kids get older, they get funnier, sharper, and even better!

Not to worry, however. I am still greedy AND sly and I managed to slip away on an antique excursion one day with my son Henry. I got loads of goodies and agree that Texas is an amazing state for vintage buys. Henry was sooooo good and he even managed to convince me to buy a gittered hen type item which I am sure I will post a picture of later. I am going to use it in a window display for what I don't know. Anyway, I am sad to see summer slipping away.....

So many new accessories (nothing priced more than $24.00!), skirts and dresses....oh my! I was beside myself when the shipments arrived last week. Fortunately, I was leaving on our family vacation to Texas. I was able to back several new cuties to wear in the cool 90 degree climate...which is "cool" to Texans apparently. At any rate, although I was sweating like the pig I am....I had on some new goodies to make myself feel better. Come in soon to the shop to check out all of the new arrivals!

July 4th in the Midwest

Is there anything better? We spent the fourth with good family and friends in Northern indiana on a lake complete with swan and all. I was reminded of how much I adore summertime in the midwest. We were staying on a 145 acre modern farm complete with all the fixins...animals, clean lake water, endless miles of stars in the clear sky, and good old sparklers.

Back home I often get caught up in all of the stress of my life as sole owner of two business, mother to three, "wife" to Cameron....etc. etc. etc. Simple is good.

Always a fan of the outdoors...well the romantic fantasy of the outdoors (the one with linen cots, wicker baskets of picnic food, bugless nights etc.)...I rarely spend nights on end camping out in the country. Heck, I don't even get my hair wet at the pool (I am my mother). Lucky for me, the outdoors has come closer to the indoors. We have a family of deers amongst other creatures that live in our neighborhood and frequent our front and back yard. This gal sadly has a limp (we named her "Mistress Limpsalot") and two babies in tow although not pictured here. This shot was taken from our sunroom. We can't figure out exactly where they live, but there are acres of land, woods, and a creek in the hood so maybe they just scamper about yard to yard. Oh deer!

The New Place

Moving definitely sucks. The payoff, in this case, was worth it. We combined our two households to include 3 kids, 2 cats, 1 blind dog, a gaggle of sea monkeys, 1 cutie pie fella, and 1 tired mama- all under the roof of an older 4000 square foot house nestled on over an acre wooded lot. We needed this much space just for all of the crap we both aquired over the years. A buyers market indeed, we were lucky enough to sell my house two days before it even went on the market. It is definitely a work in progress...but well worth the work.

The Kids at The Flying Cupcake Bakery

Well, you would think that after almost 2 years they would tire of cupcakes and ice cream. My oldest, Keegan, said to me with a very serious expression, "would you, mom?". I guess not, indeed. We popped over and had the works. This, in bakery ease, means cupcakes (yes, plural), ice cream, sprinkles dumped directly into various mouths (I swear not mine), and lots of sugary great drinks. Unfortunately, they hit their peak in the crowded bakery and then finally crashed 90 minutes later in the living room.

Ahhhhhh. Nadine Zlotogora. The original, eccentric, vintage inspired fashion of Nadine Zlotogora has an old-world feel to it. Recent romantic collections have featured fitted bodices, long jackets and crushed whispy skirts with lots and loads of mouth watering layers...all appropriately enough paired with casual pastel sneakers (sans socks, of course). Last night I "worked" through our other store, The Flying Cucpake Bakery, at the Methodist Health Foundation's 22nd Annual Art and Antiques Show. We donated 500 cupcakes for the preview party at the State Fairgrounds!
We set up this super cute booth complete with a plug/ mannequin from Girly Chic Boutique (the one not breathing with the bakery t-shirt).

That's me...well, not me...but the store down on the end with the dress logo awning. I was coming back from my lunch at local eatery Dagwoods (amazingly good and affordable sandwiches) and felt compelled to capture the grey day in Broad Ripple. Good thing its always sunny inside Girly Chic. Oddly, on this particular grey and overcast March day in Indianapolis, Broad Ripple was hoppin'. I love this place!

Customers ask all the time where the wallpaper I have on the boutique walls came from. Well, much of it came from ebay over time. I love the look of different patterns of wallpaper from the 40's and 50's and I tend to mix 'em all up in a collage striped pattern. This is the look that customers seem to like. In addition to Ebay, you might look at http://www.hannahstreasures.com/. I LOVE this site. I have ordered their adorable wallpaper covered hatboxes and have then stacked all over the boutique. They stock hundreds of vintage wallpaper rolls. Even though they are upwards of $100/roll...you don't need much to get the vintage look. Even one wall will get you the vintage warmth and cuteness you are looking for. I think 2 or 3 rolls would cover a wall 10 x 10 very nicely. If you want to save the paper, you can go halfway and add a chair-rail at the bottom of the paper across the whole wall.

I just wanted to give a hearty "shout out" to my sister store, The Flying Cupcake Bakery! Although i am biased, the cupcakes here are amazing! The Bakery has received loads of recognition and awards for its treats. I couldn't be a more proud mama! I decorated the inside in total vintage greatness for those of you who love the look of the 30's and 40's (yes...in the 1900's). However, if you are lucky enough to live in Indianapolis or the surrounding area, you can just bee-line it into Girly Chic Boutique for a large selection of Cote Bastide bath products. Luscious lotions in "linen" and "milk" scents; bath oils, shower gels, candles and potporri crystals in the popular "ambre"; and the heavenly perfume in "rose water". Anyway...just one of my favorite bath products on today's market.

Another Sweet Time at My Third Favoite Store

Anthropologie is only my third favorite store...third only to my other two stores (Girly Chic Boutique and The Flying Cupcake Bakery), of course! I was lucky enought to do my fourth cupcake tasting event (courtesy of The Flying Cupcake Bakery) at our local Indianapolis Anthropologie. It was a sweet time had by all! Met so many wonderful people who share my love of both Anthro and Cupcakes from The Flying Cupcake!

I have been lucky enough to work with several vendors offering 100% organic clothing that is made of the softest fabrics and the richest color dyes that I have ever felt and seen. New Life For Girly Chic

I am finally in the new space for Girly Chic Boutique- only one block east of the old space. While I will always have many fond memories of the old location, it was unfortunately marred by an ill-kept building and a not-too-pretty buy out of a former minority shareholder. I believe that the decision to move the store is one of the best decisions that I have made in recent years. I welcome you to take a peek with this blog, on my flickr page, or in person.
